With nearly 20 years in special education, Jen understands the system from every side — as a credentialed special education professional, and as a parent of children with IEPs. The Individualized Education Program
Federal law entitles a child with a qualifying disability to a free appropriate public education, delivered through an IEP with measurable goals, services, and accommodations. Parents are equal members of the team that writes it — and the plan is only ever as strong as that team.
504 plans
For students who don't qualify for an IEP but still need support, Section 504 provides accommodations — extended time, modified assignments, accessibility measures. The goal is simple: a disability shouldn't stand between your child and their education.
Enforcing your child’s rights
Denied evaluations, delayed services, plans that exist on paper but not in the classroom. The remedies — independent educational evaluations, state compliance complaints, mediation — all run on timelines, which is why an advocate helps most when you start early rather than after a year of frustration.
Transition & adult services
Special education doesn't end at graduation, and transition planning starts years before the diploma. Regional center services, adult supports, and — where it's genuinely needed — conservatorship, though supported decision-making should always be considered first.
